Since 2014
Volt started as a converted warehouse with a rig, a fan, and a bet that people would rather be coached than counted. Twelve years on, the rule hasn't changed.
The story
In 2014, coach Rae Kim and two friends rented a warehouse on E 4th Street, bolted a rig to the floor, and opened with eleven members — most of them friends who owed her favours.
The bet was simple: group fitness worked better when it was coached like personal training. Every class capped, every rep corrected, every benchmark recorded. It turned out people noticed.
Today the warehouse is 12,000 square feet with a recovery room and 86 weekly classes — but the coaching ratio has never dropped below 1:12, and the first class is still free.
The timeline
Volt opens in a converted warehouse on E 4th Street — 3,000 square feet and a very loud fan.
Structured group coaching launches. Twelve weekly classes become sixty.
Sauna, cold plunge and a soft-tissue station open. Recovery becomes a membership perk.
Same warehouse, same fan. The coaching ratio still never drops below 1:12.
The coaches
Four head coaches, 1:12 ratio, and a rule that nobody teaches a class they wouldn't want to take.
