Day-by-day itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Arrival

    Transfer to a beach lodge; welcome dinner and a preview of the week.

  2. Day 2

    Udawalawe

    A full day with the elephant herds — calves, bathing and birds.

  3. Day 3

    Yala I

    Dawn safari into Block One for leopards and sloth bears.

  4. Day 4

    Yala II

    An afternoon drive hunting the park's rarer residents, then a lake-side sunset.

  5. Day 5

    To Mirissa

    A scenic drive to the whale-watching capital; sunset at Coconut Tree Hill.

  6. Day 6

    Whale Morning

    Blue whales and dolphins at first light with a marine biologist.

  7. Day 7

    Galle Fort

    Ramparts, lighthouse and hidden lanes with a local historian.

  8. Day 8

    Beach Day

    A free day on the sand — snorkel, surf or do nothing at all.

  9. Day 9

    Beach Day II

    Another empty day: stilt fishermen at dawn, seafood lunch, hammock.

    Departure

    Transfer to the airport, salt in your hair and a memory card of wildlife.
