The trip

The perfect first safari. Six days alternating the park and the shore: dawn game drives in Yala's block one (leopards, sloth bears, elephants), an afternoon with Udawalawe's elephant herds, then slow days in Galle and Mirissa to let it all sink in. Soft-top jeeps, tracker-guides, and no crowds — we leave before the convoy.

Day-by-day itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Arrival & Coast

    Transfer from the airport to a beach lodge near Tissamaharama, the safari gateway.

  2. Day 2

    Yala at Dawn

    A 5am start into Block One: leopards on the rocks, elephants at the tank, and breakfast in the bush.

  3. Day 3

    Yala at Dusk

    A lazy morning, then an afternoon drive chasing the park's sloth bears and crocs before sunset.

  4. Day 4

    Udawalawe Elephants

    A full day at the park famous for reliable herds — calves, bathing elephants and hundreds of birds.

  5. Day 5

    Galle Fort

    Drive to the coast and a golden-hour rampart walk through the Dutch fortress.

  6. Day 6

    Departure

    Morning swim, then transfer to the airport with a camera full of leopards.
